Early 20th century, in the French provinces. Much courted for her beauty, Célestine is a young chambermaid who has just arrived from Paris in the service of the Lanlaire household. Fending off her master’s advances, Célestine must also deal with the very strict Madame Lanlaire who lords over the house with an iron fist. Among the domestics is Joseph, the enigmatic gardener, who exerts total fascination over her.

Benoit Jacquot started out as an assistant director before making his feature debut in 1975 with The Musician Killer. He has worked with stars of French cinema such as Isabelle Huppert, Sandrine Kiberlain and Léa Seydoux and has also made his name directing television, documentary and opera. In 1996, A Single Girl, which garnered a great deal of international attention, screened in the Berlinale Panorama. His costume drama Farewell My Queen participated in the Berlinale Competition in 2012. His last film Dairy Of A Chambermaid participated in the Berlinale Competition in 2015.
