Dr David Gale is a professor at a university in Texas; he is a loving father and renowned academic who has never made a secret of his beliefs. Dr Gale is a committed opponent of the death penalty, a stance for which he is largely respected. Then, one day, unbelievably, he finds himself accused of having raped and murdered a young supporter of his views, Constance Harraway, who once helped him fight to save the life of a condemned man. The judge sentences Gale to death.
